The Ocean Spiral, an underwater metropolis that generates energy from the seabed and is capable of providing homes and accommodation for 5,000 people. Sure, such blue-sky thinking may only seem plausible in the world of Hollywood CGI, but this is the futuristic concept proposed by Japanese construction firm Shimizu Corp. According to literature released by the company, expertise is being sought from Tokyo University, Japanese government ministries as well as energy firms to bring the project to life.

Two hostages and gunman die as Lindt cafe siege ends in shootout

  The two hostages who died in the Sydney siege have been named as Katrina Dawson, 38, and the manager of the Lindt cafe Tori Johnson, aged 34. The gunman at the centre of a 16-hour siege at a cafe in Sydney's CBD was also killed. Ms Dawson was a Sydney lawyer and mother of three and Mr Johnson had worked at the Lindt cafe since October 2012.
