Waterloo research: More Canadian teens smoking hookah

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO-One in four high school seniors are trying tobacco water pipes known as hookah. Hookah use is on the rise among Canadian youth, according to researchers with the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact. A new study reports that close to one in four high school seniors now try smoking hookah, an apparatus also known as a water pipe. The findings peg more than 78,200 youth as current water pipe users.

Students designed, built shelters now open at MSU Golf Course

They designed and built the facilities over the fall semester.Photo by: Megan Bean STARKVILLE, Miss.--Local golf enthusiasts joined Mississippi State University administrators, faculty, staff and students this week for the unveiling of two on-course shelters at the MSU Golf Course. The new structures at the fourth and 10th holes, complete with men's and women's accommodations and cart parking spaces on each side, were designed by second-year architecture majors and built by second-year building construction science students.

California State University, Northridge will confer honorary doctorates on acclaimed film director Robert Townsend and former Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky during its commencement ceremonies in May. Townsend will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts during commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16. Yaroslavsky will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 17.

3 Drinks Per Day May Raise Liver Cancer Risk

   People who have three or more alcoholic drinks per day could be raising their odds for  liver cancer But there was good news for java lovers: The report, from the World Cancer Research Fund International, found "strong evidence" that drinking coffee might actually lower a person's odds for liver cancer.

OIP Nets Another Triple Win; Defendants to Be Freed After 18 Years in Prison

  Legal advocacy from the Ohio Innocence Project at the University of Cincinnati has helped set three men wrongfully imprisoned for murder on the path to freedom. CINCINNATI — Today three men are one step closer to freedom after being wrongly incarcerated for 18 years. Derrick Wheatt, Laurese Glover and Eugene Johnson had their convictions for the 1995 murder of Clifton Hudson Jr. thrown out after nearly a decade of legal advocacy from the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP). Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, threw out the conviction, granted a new trial and set bond. The OIP expects bond to be met today, which will result in their clients' immediate release.

The Central European University in Budapest is an internationally recognized institution of postgraduate education established by George Soros and supported by the Open Society Foundations. It is accredited in the United States and Hungary.

Report: Washington State University generates $3.4 billion economic impact for Washington

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University generated more than $3.4 billion in economic impact within the State of Washington in 2014, according to a new economic impact study released today in conjunction with the launch of a yearlong celebration of the institution’s 125th birthday. According to the report, WSU delivered $18.87 in economic impact for every state dollar invested in the institution. Washington’s only land-grant research university reported nearly $2 billion in research grant expenditures between the fiscal years 2008 and 2013, with more than $341 million in research grant expenditures in fiscal 2014 alone.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS at EL Paso- In 2015, A Smoke Free Paso del Norte celebrates 15 years in the community and achievements such as making El Paso one of the first cities in the nation to pass a comprehensive clean air ordinance in 2002. In 2014, The University of Texas at El Paso announced its smoke- and tobacco-free campus policy and the City of El Paso rolled out major modifications to its tobacco ordinance.

Metastatic brain tumors are the most common type of brain tumor diagnosed today, and approximately 1,700 new patients are diagnosed in Arkansas each year. Brain metastases are actually cancer cells that have spread to the brain from another site in the body, such as the lung or breast, to form a brain tumor. HARVARD UNIVERSITY-The velvet worm is a slow-moving, unassuming creature. With its soft body, probing antennae, and jointless legs, it looks like a slug on stilts as it creeps along damp logs in tropical climates. But it has a secret weapon. In the dark of night, when an unsuspecting cricket or termite crosses its path, the worm unleashes an instantaneous torrent of slime. Two fine jets of gluey substance spray out of openings on it head, casting a sticky net that entraps prey.

To be Buddhist monks at Harvard

hante Kusala says being a Buddhist monk at Harvard has its quirks. Leaning forward and adjusting his cinnamon-colored robe in the crowded Rock Café at Harvard Divinity School (HDS), the shaven-headed Kusala confided, “In this culture, people like to give a hug in friendship, but monks don’t do that. We don’t even shake hands.” When asked what he does when hugged by a Harvard student, the Sri Lankan monk and first-year HDS student laughed and said, “We’re supposed to hug back, or I believe it’s very rude.”

Tulane University study: Medicaid expansion correlates with earlier diabetes diagnoses

Early detection of diabetes is more frequent in states that have instituted Medicaid expansion than in states that have not accepted Medicaid funds, according to a new study in “Diabetes Care.” In 2014, 26 states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid following passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), while 24 states did not. The study examines the impact of new healthcare coverage created by Medicaid expansion on diabetes diagnosis and treatment.

Northern Illinois University to host March 27 welcome luncheon for ABCC

Northern Illinois University will officially welcome the Association for Black Culture Centers (ABCC) to campus during a March 27 welcome luncheon at Altgeld Auditorium. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. The ABCC—which serves African American, Latino, Native American and Asian American campus culture centers across the country—will relocate its headquarters from Knox College to the NIU DeKalb main campus, effective July 1, 2015.

Vitamin D Supplements Might Slow Prostate Cancer

  Vitamin D supplements  may slow or prevent low-grade  prostate cancer  from progressing, a small new study suggests. "Vitamin D decreases inflammation in tissues, and inflammation is a driver of cancer," explained Bruce Hollis, the study's lead researcher and a professor of pediatrics, biochemistry and molecular biology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
