Penn State University: Penn receives grant to continue tobacco-free campus initiatives

 The American Cancer Society and CVS Health recently announced that Penn is one of 20 colleges to receive a $20,000 grant as part of the Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative to accelerate the adoption of tobacco-free campus policies. Cigarette smoking among adults may have dropped in recent decades—from 42 percent in 1965 to 17 percent in 2014, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS)—but tobacco use remains the leading cause of death and disease in the world. On campus, while few students smoke daily, around 20 percent report smoking socially.

For several years Manu Prakash, an assistant professor of bioengineering, has gone to field sites to test new, low-cost microscopes as a tool for diagnosing the parasitic disease schistosomiasis. The devices showed promise, but Prakash was perplexed by how often kids treated for the disease were getting re-infected. Prakash quickly turned his attention to preventing infections at the first place.

Northwestern University in Qatar welcomes its largest class, representing 20 nationalities

  Northwestern University in Qatar’s newest class of students is the largest group of students to enroll at NU-Q since it established a campus in 2008. The incoming freshman – similar to previous years – is quite diverse. While more than half of the class (56 percent) is Qatari, the remaining students represent 20 countries – and five continents – of origin. More than half are bilingual, with many speaking multiple languages.

A celebration of dance: SpringDance 2016 features variety of dance styles

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present SpringDance 2016 at 7:30 pm. April 1-2 in McCain Auditorium. A showcase of dance styles, SpringDance will feature jazz, tap, modern, ballet and African dance works. Kansas State University dance students will perform originally choreographed pieces by university dance faculty David Ollington, Julie Pentz and Paul Zmolek. The annual show also includes the K-State African Ensemble performing "Kpanlogo," a celebratory dance from West Africa, and a new work by the K-State Tap Ensemble. Collaborative works by Ollington and Zmolek also will be presented.

The DUT Arts and Design Faculty, in partnership with the University of KwaZulu-Natal, recently hosted a dialogue to highlight the importance of indigenous African languages in higher education institutions in driving the transformation agenda. Statistics have shown that many students drop out within their first year of study and those who remain are not able to finish their studies in minimum time due to socio-economical issues; the language barrier also being a prevalent obstacle.

A team from Midlands State University is currently representing Zimbabwe in the 28th edition of the Jean-Pictet International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition taking place in Évian-les-Bains (France) and Geneva (Switzerland) until the 26th of March 2016. The team comprising Sandra Kabaya, Brian Madziva and Zwelithini Xaba is already in France for the competition.

Professor Tony Wolk honored as first Portland State University faculty member to reach 50 years of service

  Tony Wolk, a professor of English who teaches in Portland State University’s Freshman Inquiry program, still rides his bicycle to work as he has done since 1969. He also bakes his own bread and regularly plays tennis – all factors, he says, that have kept him vibrant throughout a long career at Portland State.
