U.S. News and World Report ranks Indiana University graduate programs highly



U.S. News and World Report has again recognized Indiana University programs in business, law, education, medicine and nursing in its annual Best Graduate Schools rankings.
Ranked in the top 25 this year are the IU School of Nursing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, which was 19th overall and 10th among public universities; the IU Kelley School of Business, which was 21st overall and seventh among publics; and the IU School of Education, which was 25th overall and 15th among publics
Both law schools at IU were nationally ranked among about 200 such institutions evaluated.


The IU Maurer School of Law in Bloomington was 34th overall and tied for 16th among public universities. The IU McKinney School of Law ranked 102nd overall and 55th among public universities.
The IU Maurer School of Law’s tax program was ranked 16th, sixth among public schools. Its intellectual property program was ranked 20th (fifth among public schools), the third year in a row it has placed in the top 25 nationally. Maurer’s  international law program ranked 23rd, ninth among public schools.
The part-time Doctor of Jurisprudence degree program at the IU McKinney School of Law at Indianapolis was ranked 26th and 11th among such programs at public universities. Its health law specialty was ranked 11th and fourth among publics. Additionally, McKinney's legal writing program was ranked 19th nationally (tied for 7th of public law schools).

Other schools had specialties that were nationally ranked.
Two Kelley specialties were in the Top 10 and another five in the Top 20: entrepreneurship, which was ninth; accounting, which was 10th; information systems and production/operations, 11th; marketing, 18th; management, 20th; and finance, 21st.
Three School of Education specialties were in the Top 10: higher education administration, which was ninth, and curriculum instruction and elementary teacher education, which were 10th. Five other specialties ranked were secondary teacher education, which was 11th, student counseling and personnel services, which was 12th, and educational administration/supervision, educational policy, educational psychology and special education, which each were 18th.

The IU School of Medicine at Indianapolis' ranking of its research activity was 45th and 19th among public universities. The ranking of its education of physicians who work in primary patient care was 47th and 29th among public universities.
Complete rankings are available at www.usnews.com/grad. They will be included in the Best Graduate Schools 2016 guidebook. Highlights were made available to colleges and universities in advance of today's release.

U.S. News annually produces rankings in education, business, law and medicine that are based on formulas that consider reputation surveys, selectivity, research funding and productivity, outcomes for graduates and other factors. Specialties in the schools are evaluated through surveys of deans, program directors and faculty. Other programs are typically ranked once every four years.

Dr. William Everett Pens New Book on the History of the Kansas City Philharmonic

The Conservatory is pleased to note that Dr. William A. Everett, Curators' Professor of Musicology, has written Music for the People:  A History of the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, 1933–82.  Dr. Everett notes, "When I was asked to write a history of the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, which was the professional orchestra in Kansas City from 1933 to 1982, I thought it would be a fairly straightforward task.  I was genuinely surprised at the wealth of musical treasures that existed in Kansas City thanks to the Philharmonic.  Writing the book became a series of discoveries and 'wow' moments that happened nearly every day.  I am particularly grateful to the Norman B. Kahn family for entrusting me with telling the Philharmonic’s story, to Michael Stern for writing a generous foreword to the book, and to everyone who shared their memories of the orchestra and its legacy."

92-year-old elementary school pupil inspires a generation in Kenya

She grew up in Kenya under colonial rule, when women didn't get an education. Now in her 90s, Priscilla Sitienei is changing that, attending elementary school -- and inspiring a generation. She started five years ago as a kindergartner at a boarding school near Eldoret. She's in fourth grade today. "I had grandchildren and great-grandchildren who shunned school," she says by phone from Ndalat. "That made me mad. I decided I have to show them that education is important."
