Mustangs announce three new recruits including World Champion Tia Miric
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women's volleyball
team is pleased to announce the additions of Tia Miric, Kaleigh Matheson, and
Emma Somerville to the team's roster for the 2015-16 season.
"We are excited to announce Tia, Kaleigh and Emma as the newest additions to the Mustangs women's volleyball program," said Mustangs head coach Melissa Bartlett. "Each of them brings top level club experience, strong academic backgrounds and they all chose to attend Western because they want to compete for a school that will be successful at the provincial and national level. That is our goal as a program - and these three players are a step in that direction for our team."
Tia Miric leads the Mustangs 2015 recruiting class and arrives at Western with major experience on the international stage, having helped Canada win its first-ever U21 World Beach Volleyball Championship in 2014 and winning tournament MVP honours in the process. Hailing from Thornhill, Ontario, Tia will join fellow Leaside Lightning Volleyball Club alumnae Aja Gyimah, Katherine Tsiofas, Windemere Jarvis, and Katie McKenna in suiting up for the purple and white.
"Tia is one of the most well rounded volleyball players I have ever seen - not only is she extremely physically talented but her knowledge of the game and natural leadership will be an asset for our program for years to come," says Bartlett. "She has proven herself as one of the top young beach athletes in the world, and she will bring that big game experience to our young and talented roster next season."
Often competing above her age level, Miric has earned seven gold medals, two silver medals, and three bronze medals throughout her six years of beach volleyball. On the indoor court, Leaside's starting setter has earned two consecutive Provincial All-Star Awards, each accompanied by a Canadian National All-Star Award.
While she was an outstanding setter while with Leaside, it's unclear if she'll take on a different position with the Mustangs, as Bartlett notes that the 5'8" dynamo "has the ability to fill multiple roles as an indoor player - she is a fierce competitor and a great teammate."
Outside hitter and Vancouver native Kaleigh Matheson is expected to be a game-changer on the court for the Mustangs in 2015-16.
"Kaleigh is a player who I believe can have an immediate impact on our program" says Bartlett. "As a true P1 player she is a very offensive left side and has proven herself as a top player in the very competitive BC club system. She is also an excellent student and the type of student-athlete we are proud to welcome into our program."
Boasting an impressive resume from her time with the Vancouver Thunder Volleyball Club, Matheson was a U17 All-Star and silver medalist at the 2014 BC Club Provincials. She was also selected for Team BC U18, where she helped the team to a bronze medal finish at the National Challenge Cup.
Her high-school record is no less striking, as she was given a first team all-star honour at BC AA High School Provincial Championships, named MVP in 2014 LMISSGVA league play, and earned both a gold medal and an MVP title at Western Canadian Independent Schools Volleyball Championships to match her gold medal from the 2014 AA Lower Mainland Championships.
Emma Somerville, a graduate of the DRVC volleyball program and Sinclair Secondary School, is the second outside hitter to be added to the Mustang lineup.
From Oshawa, Somerville is a two-time national club champion. With an OFSAA bronze and 16U National bronze medal already under her belt, she hopes to find similar success on the court while dressed in purple and white.
A 2014 HPC participant, silver medalist at the 2015 Ontario Winter Games, and recent AAAA OFSAA gold medalist, Somerville's decision to come to Western was determined by the academic strength of the Science faculty, as well as the opportunity to work with Bartlett.
"Emma has been involved with our program for two years now and it has been amazing to see her develop into one of the toughest competitors in our province. She really brings a next level intensity to the game and I know she has the ability to develop into a very well rounded attacker and defender."
