Varsity reviews partnership with National Defence College
Discussions are underway between the
University of Nairobi (UoN) and National Defence College (NDC) to revise the
academic collaboration between the two.
University
of Nairobi(UoN) - In addition, the institutions will increase areas of
research addressing issues affecting the country such as insecurity.
In a meeting between the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter M.
F. Mbithi and the NDC Commandant Lieutenant General Jackson Waweru, it emerged
that the collaboration has seen NDC offer diploma and degree programmes to
personnel in the Defence Force.
Prof. Mbithi said that the University is ready and
willing to support government agencies to achieve their own mandate research
and extension programmes. The University will help the National Defence College
seek new knowledge in the area of security. Areas of collaboration between the
University and the college include joint research, publications, training and
study tours among others.
Lieutenant General Waweru urged the University to help
the servicemen with the academic programs. He called on the University to offer
more programmes especially degrees with the college. He revealed that as a
college, they will be travelling to India to benchmark. The practise the world
over – more so United Kingdom, United States and India is that senior people in
the military are educated. They are encouraged to get bachelor’s, master’s and
doctorate degrees with the possibility of credit transfers. This is what
National Defence College seeks to achieve as they collaborate with the
University.
Prof. Lucy Irungu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Production and
Extension, noted that there are many emerging issues on security, piracy
and together with the Defence College, the University can carry out research
and create new knowledge.
