On Monday, March 30, 2015, Cairo University Council has held its meeting, headed by Prof. Dr.\ Gaber Nassar, President of Cairo University, and attended by Prof. Dr.\ Sherif Hammad, Minister of Scientific Research, Dr.\ Khaled Zakariah El-Adly, Giza Governor, Prof. Dr.\ Mahmoud Saqr, President of Scientific Research Academy, and Dr.\ Farouk El-Oqda. The Council has initiated its meeting with congratulating Egypt as a government and people on the success of Arab Summit and return of Arab cooperation. It has also commended the success of the economic conference at Sharm Al-Sheikh.

Dr. William Everett Pens New Book on the History of the Kansas City Philharmonic

The Conservatory is pleased to note that Dr. William A. Everett, Curators' Professor of Musicology, has written Music for the People:  A History of the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, 1933–82.  Dr. Everett notes, "When I was asked to write a history of the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, which was the professional orchestra in Kansas City from 1933 to 1982, I thought it would be a fairly straightforward task.  I was genuinely surprised at the wealth of musical treasures that existed in Kansas City thanks to the Philharmonic.  Writing the book became a series of discoveries and 'wow' moments that happened nearly every day.  I am particularly grateful to the Norman B. Kahn family for entrusting me with telling the Philharmonic’s story, to Michael Stern for writing a generous foreword to the book, and to everyone who shared their memories of the orchestra and its legacy."

92-year-old elementary school pupil inspires a generation in Kenya

She grew up in Kenya under colonial rule, when women didn't get an education. Now in her 90s, Priscilla Sitienei is changing that, attending elementary school -- and inspiring a generation. She started five years ago as a kindergartner at a boarding school near Eldoret. She's in fourth grade today. "I had grandchildren and great-grandchildren who shunned school," she says by phone from Ndalat. "That made me mad. I decided I have to show them that education is important."
