Hakstol, trio of players up for NCHC awards

Hakstol and three of his players are among the finalists for 2014-15
National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) individual awards, the conference
office announced on Thursday afternoon.
Hakstol was named one of three finalists for the NCHC's
Herb Brooks Coach of the Year Award, Zane
McIntyre (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.) is a dual finalist for both
Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year, Jordan
Schmaltz (Jr., Verona, Wis.) is up for Offensive Defenseman of the
Year, and Mark
MacMillan(Sr., Penticton, British Columbia) is a finalist for Defensive
Forward of the Year.
Hakstol, in his 11th year at North Dakota, has guided the
nation’s top-ranked team to an overall record of 25-7-3 (.757) and the Penrose
Cup as NCHC regular-season champion. It marks the 11th time in as many seasons
under Hakstol that UND has reached the 20-win plateau and the eighth time it
has won 25. Hakstol was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 2008-09 and is a
seven-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the
year.
McIntyre, a native of Thief River Falls, Minn., is a
Goaltender of the Year finalist for the second straight year and is UND’s
first-ever finalist for NCHC Player of the Year. Named to the All-NCHC First
Team earlier this week, McIntyre started all 24 of UND’s conference games and
went 16-6-2 with a 2.15 goals against average and .931 save percentage. He led
the league in wins and winning percentage (.708) while ranking second in save
percentage and third in goals against average.
Schmaltz, who earned his second straight All-NCHC Second
Team honor on Wednesday, collected 13 points during conference play, including
a pair of power-play goals.
MacMillan tied for the conference goal-scoring lead with
13 despite missing the final two games of the regular season due to injury. A
native of Penticton, British Columbia, MacMillan was named to the All-NCHC
First Team on Wednesday. The No. 1 center on UND’s league-leading
penalty-killing unit (83.6 percent), MacMillan tied for the NCHC lead with two short-handed
goals during league play.
The award winners will be announced at the annual NCHC
awards banquet on Thursday, March 19 in
Minneapolis.
